Howto Defragment on Idle + what is defragmenting (see descr)

You need Flash player 8+ and JavaScript enabled to view this video.

Instructions & Additional Information

*correction: you need to put the JkDefragScreenSaver.exe also in windows folder too for the screen saver.

Sorry about the audio quality. Mic Boost was on. I lowered the volume after recording but it's still very blown.

Also in the scheduled task settings, you can make it stop defragging by checking the box "stop the task if computer ceases to be idle". Forgot to mention it.

This defragments pagingfiles / "registry hives"

If you read on the jkdefrag page it tells you how to use tweakUI to change the default defrag program

jasonvigo171 Smart Defrag™ by iobit is a good choice it runs in the background and automatically defrags when cpu runs below a user set parameter, as soon as it reaches above that it stops. very transparent and efficient recommend by Cnet for those that care
VampiricMidget you're the only one.

kizzokat You can lose the ability to recover documents with defragmenters though (if you're not careful!). Be careful about chosing your settings, or you'll REALLY lose documents when your computer shuts down without notice. Scary!
DannyBoi56 Use Linux EXT3 Journaling File System. You will never have to defrag again.
DannyBoi56 Get XP.
AbyssalKing Thank you!
n00borama In my computer type into the address bar "%temp%", shift+delete all files in there, that may free up some space. Note it will error and say a file is in use if it hits a temporary file from a current windows logon.
ltech12 Thanks!
Gaz0707 Thanks for not speaking in typical monotone. I actually enjoyed listening to this.

LegendKillerO2Jammer Hmm..There's also free IOBit Defragmenter, can do defragment while idle too..But based on my experience, it's doesn't defrag while idle lol! (WARNING: IOBit is BETA!)
StormFlip "And i can set the settings....oh i guess it doesn't have settings, but i can set a wait time" funny
calrogman It will, it just defrags on the fly, all the time, if necassary.
ttk1opc fragmenting should never occur, its a microsoft thing, GNU/linux will not fragment in the first place.
Piratesteves Hey, I was wondering when I put that screensaver in my c:\windows , how can I tell its defragmenting when im idle? So far I haven't really seen any thing that shows it doing something.
gusti77 Jimmy's tutorials are the best! My laptop is running so much faster now, after a couple weeks of constantly defragging on idle (it has a huge HD) I would love to see some linux tutorials on the channel.
MasutaMantoruri loving the tutorials dude keep at it
scutterbear Ahh, ok. Thank you. I just subbed to your channel recently and am really enjoying your tutorials. And thank you for taking the time to answer my comment. Most channel owners dont do that, so it's an added plus and gives me more respect for you. Thanks again friend.
jimmyrcom every time it reruns it scans the disk to see if there's any optimizations it can make. you probably just caught it rescanning
scutterbear No, I didnt have anything else running. I shut down everything else. I wasn't downloading anything. It said it was at 100% at 4am this morning. I checked it at 10am and same thing and it was still running. I am not a computer expert by any means. Pretty much a novice. So I was just wondering if I should have left it running. I dont really know how to tell if it completely did the job.
jimmyrcom if you got p2p or other downloading going on it will do it infinitely.
scutterbear I downloaded the JKdefrag and ran it yesterday. I even let it run all night. 24 hours later, it was still running. LOL, is this normal?? Granted, the drive I was defragging is 80G and probably hasn't been properly defragged in a long time. The drive is almost completely full. But should it take that long?

kizzokat You can lose the ability to recover documents with defragmenters though (if you're not careful!). Be careful about chosing your settings, or you'll REALLY lose documents when your computer shuts down without notice. Scary!
DannyBoi56 Use Linux EXT3 Journaling File System. You will never have to defrag again.
DannyBoi56 Get XP.

n00borama In my computer type into the address bar "%temp%", shift+delete all files in there, that may free up some space. Note it will error and say a file is in use if it hits a temporary file from a current windows logon.

I checked it at 10am and same thing and it was still running. I am not a computer expert by any means. Pretty much a novice. So I was just wondering if I should have left it running. kizzokat You can lose the ability to recover documents with defragmenters though (if you're not careful!). Be careful about chosing your settings, or you'll REALLY lose documents when your computer shuts down without notice. Scary!
DannyBoi56 Use Linux EXT3 Journaling File System. You will never have to defrag again.
DannyBoi56 Get XP.

gusti77 Jimmy's tutorials are the best! My laptop is running so much faster now, after a couple weeks of constantly defragging on idle (it has a huge HD) I would love to see some linux tutorials on the channel.

scutterbear No, I didnt have anything else running. I shut down everything else. I wasn't downloading anything. It said it was at 100% at 4am this morning. I checked it at 10am and same thing and it was still running. I am not a computer expert by any means. Pretty much a novice. So I was just wondering if I should have left it running. I dont really know how to tell if it completely did the job.

torresgoal9 does it speed up your computer?
kizzokat You can lose the ability to recover documents with defragmenters though (if you're not careful!).
Note it will error and say a file is in use if it hits a temporary file from a current windows logon.
ltech12 Thanks!

ttk1opc fragmenting should never occur, its a microsoft thing, GNU/linux will not fragment in the first place.
But should it take that long?
maximefcom jkdefrag is not named MyDefrag
