I'd like to suggest investors dot com for picking and analyzing stocks, and pick them based on the info there and play around. They also have a great learning center ;)

ScratchedChalkVideos: A stock is the company or organization. A share is how much you buy of that company.
E.x- I buy 100 shares of Microsoft.
