Verator: I agree Norton is a virus in itself if you look at the architecture. I use ESET Nod32 and Agnitium Outpost Firewall. As well as Spybot Search and Destroy, Webroot SpySweeper, Adaware SE Professional, Spyhunter, Registry Mechanic, Ccleaner, and Wintasks Pro 2005. And with all this i still got infected i recommend if you have been getting popups from an ip that starts with ht tp://89...... or system doctor etc Download and use Vundo Fix it worked like a charm. This video was awesome!

jimmyrcom: Norton Antivirus is a virus. google "Norton Antivirus is a virus". Windows Vista sucks, and is slower than XP in everyway according to benchmarks, and it has DRM which helps the RIAA to screw you over for downloading music. Limewire sucks too.

sarkar112: No AntiVirus/AntiSpyware can provide completely accurate signatures/heuristics. (In this video, it was claimed that ClamWin and AntiVir will provide 100% accuracy.) I'd reccommend using a sandbox, (google: sandboxie) although theres still always a possibility that whatever solution you use may be exploited.

Although on my laptop I have Vista and Avast is having some problems installing its own next version, must be the notorious "cancel or allow" protection that prevents it. Very safe MS, preventing my antivirus from upgrading.

KB1KOI: A good way to tell is the file size of the file. If its less than 300kb regardless of file type (except .mid or .midi), chances are that its spyware or a virus.

.shs (shellscrap)
.scr (screensavers, insanely common)
and the one that so many people forgets
.lnk (shortcuts, and yes, they can be malicious even tho most people don't think about it, and the extension is never shown)

FN1294: A really good Anti-Spyware thingy is Spyhunter, I had a virus called "Zlob" and it completely removed it in seconds. A downer is that the software is not free, but however you can just search for it on rapidshare or piratebay or anything.

boyzroks: get a free virus scanner and write down the location of the trojan, then go to safe mode on windows and open windows explorer/my computer and just move them to the recycle bin(remember to press remove all items from recycle bin)

CherryStadt: AVIRA IMHO offers the best mix of speed and detection. You can get a free 3 month trial of it (security suite). NOD32 is another one with a great mix of speed and detection (another fav). Kaspersky and Bitdefender are good but slow....G-DATA AVK is apparently the best, but slow.
CherryStadt: Norton 2008 is also pretty good with excellent detection, not as bloated and annoying as previous versions...which is a different matter compared to detection - which was always good.

beefysam180: The best anti-virus that you have to pay for like 50 bucks a year but has 97.9 percent detection rate (Highest) is name Nod32. I have this with an 2 year license, very good I've deleted many viruses and malware crap.
CherryStadt: NOD32 does not have the highest detection rate (it ranks about 8-10th overall. The Single engine antivirus with the highest detection rate is AVIRA. G-data (best overall) has two engines (Kaspersky and Avast) but is way too slow.
However, NOD32 does have the best heuristics on the market (the best AV engine) with very few false positives.

tidycat4: I usually type in partial names so that I can tell the real files from the fakes. If the results are the same partial file names as was my search, then I know they aren't real. For example, if I'm looking for the song "Vision is a Naked Sword" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, I will only type "Vision is Naked Sw" and see what results come back. It used to be so easy to determine by this.

Helped me get rid of a virus a couple of weeks ago and seems to be able to detect almost anything.
Also a great firewall is "comodo firewall" if you want the best protection then this firewall will give it to you, it won't let anything go through without your prior consent.
tidycat4: Why don't you people just separate your drive into two partitions, one for your OS and one for storage. The viruses never get into my storage drive, and that's where I keep all the stuff I want to keep. Then I use Norton Ghost to restore when I need to. (from the restore file stored on the storage drive) Also go into msconfig and disable all those viruses.

hanedagamer: You mention a lot of things here, but there are other measures you can take too.
1) Hardware firewall (on your router), in addition to a software firewall
2) DON'T RUN AS ADMIN. Create a login with limited rights and use that for day-today tasks, only using the admin account for installing software, making system-wide changes, etc.
3) Disable simple file sharing and block access from limited users to important system files and whatnot
hanedagamer: You can also encrypt everything on your harddrive. I use a program called "TrueCrypt".
It offers real-time encryption/decryption to files to allow programs to run normally, and offers many encryption/hashing algorithms to encrypt with.
All of my files are encrypted with AES-256 and RIPEMD-160 (these are used in government agencies and all sorts of systems where security is critical).
hanedagamer: Another thing you can do is rather than Windows XP, instead run OpenBSD as your operating system. Go on google and search for it. It's literally the most secure Os in the world, with only 2 known security holes in 10 years (that have been fixed now).
Lot's of big companies and government agencies around the world make heavy use of this OS.
It's similar to Linux too, and can use the same libraries (and a lot of programs for Linux can run on OpenBSD).

hanedagamer: As a side note, you can also disable some of Windows XP's services for extra security. Just google 'disable windows xp services". (aswell as disable certain services that are security risks, disabling unnescessary services can increase system performance).
Another thing you can do in addition to a firewall is access the internet through a proxy (but I won't explain how to do so here. Just google it).
