jimmyrcom: I added an annotation for the Deustch. I can orally recognize it as german but I didn't have much time to pronounce it in my head. I just threw out the "e and the "s", otherwise I probably would have bastardized it as "douche". Also, Save states FTW =P. They're video games, sit on a joystick of you dare want to standardize them or say one is more legitimate. They're two diff styles.

Just a quick question regarding Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting. What is the difference between the two? I'm guessing dedicated is faster, but is it really worth paying like $100 more a month? Thanks for making this video Jimmy I'm going to set it up right now to use for testing instead of uploading to my web server every time I want to preview changes I have made :) Should save me some bandwidth too!
jimmyrcom: Dedicated is a computer just for you. You have full control over it. Shared means 1 server is shared with multiple people, CPU resources are much more limited and if some guy slows down the server everyone suffers.

jimmyrcom: I've worked with wamp before too. When I tried it though it didn't set itself to startup automatically and php scripts had to be started with "<?php" instead of "<?". Really minor stuff that's easy to fix but it can easily mess up beginners if I recommend it. wamp probably takes up a lot less space than xampp though. I wouldn't really switch if you already have wamp
ddpxl: u are totally right .. in MAMP you dont have this problem .. i usually do everything on a mac and MAMP is really easy .. but when i tried to to move the files on a WAMP server i had that <?php error .. and i allmost got mad when i couldnt log into my database because he couldnt read my username and password out of my 4 line log.php .. :O .. really stupid bug .. <br/><br/>xampp is better :]

jimmyrcom: As it says in the title, it'll install apache, mysql, php, perl. If you don't know what a webserver is or what those programs do google or wikipedia them.

jimmyrcom: lots of extensions don't work. It's javascript is way faster, uses less ram, a few new features. The release candidates are out so don't expect all that many changes, just minor bug fixes.

Alt clicking opens translation in the "older box" and opens small useless boxers where the translation should be, I can translate multiple sections.

jimmyrcom: google your router model number along with port forward. It's different for each router but you can almost always find a tutorial with pics.

jimmyrcom: Some other program is using that port, programs like skype sometimes reserve it. Start - run - cmd - and type: netstat -b
it should tell you if any prog is reserving port 80.
Valthecatlover: Why would someone want their own server as opposed to using a free host online with a subdomain or a purchased domain name?
jimmyrcom: Because you don't have to upload anything, you can develop stuff without being online, you can eat 100% of the CPU or write 5 million files without any restrictions.

jimmyrcom: You could send him your network address since you're on the same network. eg. start - run - ipconfig and copy the IP address

jimmyrcom: If you have no firewall people can potentially access what you can access by going to localhost. Stuff in your htdocs directory. Mysql is pretty safe unless you manually give remote access permissions to the main user and you don't have a password. Considering apache is on like 90 million servers it's pretty safe. Beware of installing 3rd party plugins though.

jimmyrcom: It's the same thing except a few less features and by default "<?php" is required instead of "<?". Also it didn't auto open on startup. Simple stuff to fix but beginners get stuck infinitely easily. I want them to get started correctly without having to touch the php.ini.

jimmyrcom: I use virtualdub which is free and they look fine. Upload at 1024kbps, with h264 codec and mp3 audio 44100hz with 128kbps and it should look great regardless of the video editor. Making it 320 x 240 resolution and sharpening it can help.

jimmyrcom: You can use it for that, yes. It's not vnc though but you can easily transfer files with filezilla's ftp server.

LTSprevails: really thats interesting. I am studying for my certs to get a system or network admin position for a long while. I think Ill be ready soon if I keep studying alot. I thought of going into self employment too, but havent had that kind of capital. I was thinking about computer repair. Ive had websites too but always with hosting companies where all I had to do was learn their site development software to build the site. I hope I can get paid well eventually.
LTSprevails: Ive had these servers before but I was a bit overwhelmed at that time with mastering all the security aspects involved. You know how it is. You practically have to be paranoid about all the possible things that can go wrong with unauthorized penetration. Actually, this is most interesting.. Im getting another desktop pc in the next few days and Ive already been thinking of turning it into a few types of servers, although I have not much use for it other than to learn more.
jimmyrcom: Security isn't a big issue unless you use a lot of 3rd party apps. If you have an 8 char + case sensitive password your should be fine, apache mysql and other apps have already been insanely looked through for possible issues.

basilbrushnz: Yeah I like XAMPP, I use to install apache, php, mysql and perl seperatly but for some reason windows xp service pack 2 broke everything leading me to try XAMPP. If you are a learning php/perl installing apache on your box is the best thing you can do.

jimmyrcom: preconfigured just means "working". why would you hate that? you can still configure it as much as you want after installation. This lets beginners get started with the tutorials without complications.

jimmyrcom: It's for remote filesharing. You have to open incoming port 21 then you can connect to your computer via an ftp client like filezilla.

jimmyrcom: port forward incoming port 80 on wire router or software firewall. I can't tell you how to do it because it depends on what hub / firewall your using. Check your manual or google it.

Servers need to be turned on to be accessed. If your machine is turned off, other people cannot connect to it. (There are some 'wake on lan' functions, but for simplicity, we'll leave them out.)
Some (most?) large corporations or businesses will have 'redundant' servers -- when one goes offline, the other kicks in to pick up the slack.
chexed: your computer would have to be on. all of the information would be on your hard drives which would get no power to be read if it were turned off, plus some other reasons...

PureLogix: Just put the files that you want to share in your "htdocs" folder. As long as you have your virtual hosts set up right in windows and your ports are forwarded properly people should be about to access it just my entering your IP into their web browser.
By default apache serves the index.html.
If you want to make it easy for them to get your files then make a list of links to them on your index.html.
Thats pretty much it. Undoubtedly something will crop up along the way though. Such is life!

XAMPP Makes your computer a webb server(webb server is a space for internet files etc)
By puting the files in your webb server(you computer) it will be refreshed as a website on the webb.
