OptimizeXP: NO this does not work on Windows 98. NEVER disable services from MSCONFIG only use the Services.msc and if you do not know 100% exactly what the service does DO NOT Disable it. The Elder Geeks Guide is not accurate only get information Microsoft's site. Disabling Services improves nothing but boot times. Googel "XP Myths".

I've made windows services before and I know I can make a trojan or something that sends out spam emails fairly easily. Are you saying msconfig doesn't contain non microsoft services in 98? Disabling unneeded windows services will take away a negligible amount of memory but the point of the video is disabling services to non microsoft services that may be stacking up and can be used to host trojans and spyware, because users can't just ctrl+alt+delete and close / delete services
OptimizeXP: svhosts is a generic host process that can have many services attached to it. You need to use Process Explorer NOT Task Manager to properly see what is going on. If you system is idle some of the services launched by svchosts can appear to be using a lot of CPU but this is misleading because the system is in an idle state or checking for Windows Updates which does not effect system performance.
jimmyrcom: just search svhosts.exe 100% on google and you'll see a bunch of people complaining. I know it's a generic service, but services are not unprone magically to memory leaks or viruses. People should inspect their services and disable unneeded ones to prevent such issues. for the IEXPLORER.EXE virus (all caps) it has a service that protects the virus and recreates it on startup if deleted.
OptimizeXP: Yes and many people have various non default services running and are infected with Spyware and do not understand what they are reading in Task Manager. You must know 100% what a service does before disabling it. Disabling services is not how you clean or prevent infections.
jimmyrcom: I'm not talking about the disabling UNNEEDED default MS services. Disabling those doesn't make too much difference. Obviously you're not too get at computer repair because I've seen hundreds of computers where the person is complaining about it being slow, then I see hundreds of services and startup programs, many pertaining to some spyware / fake spyware removal software they installed. As for MSconfig vs services.msc, read the video's name.
OptimizeXP2: Listen Punk Blocking me doesn't make you right - I have repaired over 5000 systems and have been doing this a lot longer than you. Those "slow" computers are massively infected with malware that needs to be cleaned with the proper removal tools. Msconfig cannot do this. The only thing disabling services and startup items improves is boot times. The video's name is misleading because it should only should say improves boot times.
jimmyrcom: Startup items continue to run after startup and so do non microsoft services. You're insane if you think that just affects boot time. I guess you repaired them by reinstalling the OS or changing the power source lol. For people that need a quick fix disabling services IS a good solution. Uninstalling and removal tools are obviously the ideals, but disabling problems are the best bet and the quick fix for people who don't know much about comps. Programs can have memory leeks and loop issues.
OptimizeXP3: Non-microsoft services should still only be disabled via the services.msc. The majority of startup items are system tray stuff like quicktime, java ect. These have nothing to do with malware infection. I repair systems based on the problem. Reinstall is only necessary due to damaging infections such as Rootkits. PSU have nothing to do with software issues. There is no quick fix for infections, only an idiot would think that. Memory leaks have nothing to do with anything either. Loop issues? WTF?

OptimizeXP2: You are giving inaccurate advice based on information you do not understand. The guide you recommend the "Elder Geek" does not even understand that the Task Scheduler Service is required for Prefetching which makes his whole services guide useless. If you want to help people clean malware then you need to recommend using the proper tools, msconfig is not it.

for instance if i typed nintendo in the address bar, it would go to the nintendo website.... quite useful

KanoakaVirus: If you have to do all this to make your pc run faster then buy a new one lol, slow pc's are often cused by low ram or delayer type programs or programs running in the background like trojans :P or simple things like v scans but this isnt critisism or anything just advise to those with annoyingly slow pcs

21Panzer21: when u right click properties on my computer , there at the performance choose ADVENCED and at the VIRTUAL MEMORY you will see CHANGE ... just set the amount of space u want ur computer to use like if it is RAM ... good when u don't have money to buy real memory :D.. just do't put too much otherwise u risk ur computer not to run anymore

jimmyrcom: You can disable any non microsoft . Just google the service name before disabling it to see what it is. You probably don't want to disable your wireless card, laptop touch pad, etc.

3> disabled
and most have at least two or three sentence descriptions and some have whole paragraph descriptions for the service, and sometimes setting to manual is good enough to prevent the service from running.
