klockantre: You have to take into consideration the overhead of the TCP/IP protocol (downstream data generates upstream data due to acknowledgement packets being sent, etc). Uncapped upload will cripple the download rate. A good idea is to limit the upload rate to about 3/4 of maximum upload speed.
jimmyrcom: that's what selecting automatic does. Setting max upload doesn't always make downloads slower it really depends on what type of connection you have.

BTW, I had upload at 0, then clicked automatic, my torrent with 0 seeds and 6 leechers went from 0.5kb/s to 30kb/s, but my torrent with 1 seeder and 5 leechers isnt even downloading and estimated time is at "infinite."

Xycondetsu: I have personally gotten upto 120kb/s DL spd. and only 35kb/s UL spd., on certain files. What I do is of course make my upload as fast as possible. However if you can get connected to 80+ seeders. Then you will notice that your download speed will increase substantially.

WOGI5M: Routers and firewalls are very similar. They both block anything unusual. My Azureus had a NAT problem because my router was blocking my torrent. So, what I did was create port forwarding.
Also, you shouldn't put the upload speed to automatic because it actually slows down the download speed. Just experiment with the ratio of upload/download and do put the setting at what ever is most efficient.

urbanr0cker: hmm, i get nothing'. + i was always under the impression that you should LOWER your upload speeds because uploading would be using all your bandwidth.
williamn6133: No! Upload and download are totally separate. Uploading heavily will not affect your download speed, ever.
The only time it may SEEM to affect your download speed is viewing web pages, if you are uploading to the max. This is because in order to view a webpage, you need to send a little data back to the server, and your browser can't send it very well if your torrent client has your upload maxed out.

If i let it upload at 100KBS it kills my download. I keep it a max of 25KBS upload and some torrents fly at over 700KBS.
runnerthemoose: There is one other thing that makes a HUGE difference. Windows XP was crippled on SP1 and will only allow 10 concurrent connections. Do a search for evld4226patch223d-en.zip. This will allow you to open up the connections. 150 will max out a 16mb ADSL on downloads. thats 5min 700mb download.

CKyzOnLy: well my way is a little different, first go and do a speed test and take down the numbers ov ur up, and dl speed, and go to a calculator and multiply them by 8, now you can enter these in your max up speed, and max dl, speed in azureus or whatever torrent client you use, umm i'll use mine as an example so i have 3050
dl speed and 324 upl speed multiplied by 8 i get 305 for my dl speed and 32 for my upl speed, cos azureus only accepts max in kbps, woch is yea kb multiplied by 8,

- For cable users uploading at high speed kills your download speed
- A torrent with a lot of peers/seeds uploading at 10 kb/s you can still download at your max rate.
The "high" upload should only make a difference when there are not many seeds/peers.

tuberciend: there is no way to boost your downloading speed. its about the number of peers and seeds. all these videos with speed of 200 and up is due to the torrent being popular and been downloaded alot. and the patchs some webites have, have a virus in the backdoor. a patch wont boost your speed. try a torrent that is 0/0 and see if it boosts. doubt it. soon somebody will make a program that makes this stuff look like analog television, so wait.

Ofcourse you can make faster downloads via torrents, xp has installed a program that only allows 10 MAX Half tcp open, so some wizkid made a program to allow more tcps open, so you can download the bat file and it will install and open more tcp's which will make torrents faster.

orika001: common Guys, it it based on uploads.. because youre downloading from a person who's uploading.. so if he has a connection speed of 384kpbs, you will also download on that rate. Even thought you have a VERY HIGH speed( 4000000mbps) it does't mean that your download speed is fast in downloading torrents...

natedogbfd: I have bad news, I Think cox disables your Ip if they detect high upload speed for longer than 10 minutes. In hampton rhoades I solved this by unplugging my modem and reseting the IP, here in Rhode island I have had to call cox twice and play stupid. Also taking the router out of the loop helped, I was able to get 400 kbps (that was with a 10kbps upload cap). maybe it was just the router (linksys) although I had it fowarded correctly, . I increase the cap and my ip starts dropping.
Nocash350: NO matter how much people fiddle with these settings it is absoulutely IMPOSSIBLE to speed up these programs unless your internet service provider allows you to have such speed

lbrtdy: I got something else to add. Also incresing your max tcp/ip connections helps also. windows xp sp2 allows only 10 half opened tcp/ip connections. And vista only allows 4 (i think) This makes you cannnot connect to alot of seeds. So using (TCPoptimizer) to increase max tcp/ip connections allows you to connect to more peers and thus downloading faster on torrents.

Urbanninja3: if your router is acessable you can usualy tell. the best way to access you router is to type in your home IP which is usually something like 192.168.1.1 you can check using a cmd promt aswell.

I don't limit my upload speed at all and my typical download speed is 150-250kB/s, sometimes 3-4 times that if the seeders have speedy connections.

Another thing I am sure you know is that the dl "speed" on the torrent depends on several preexisting conditions, such as weather the torrent is public or private, the ratios and trackers.

If the upload is too high, ur download speed will decrease, because although the tracker allocates more bandwidth to you, your personal bandwidth will be eaten up by uploads, and you will be unable to download very fast. Upload should be limites to approx. 1/4 to 1/3 of your total upload bandwidth. Experiment with limits on your own to see what works bets for you.

I was downloading a game and i set the value of the uploading speed to a max of 1 so i didnt have to upload then few days later i chose to make the ports work then i watched this and noticed i just needed to set the upload speed back to 0 and now im getting good speeds thanks for the tutorial of changing my value back to 0..lol :))

shouldntdothat: In my personal experience, if Bit Torrent is being cap'd by the ISP you will want to cap at around 80% of that cap. If upload is maxed out downloads will become sluggish. My ISP seems to cap at around 60-70 kb/s so for me 40- 50 is a good rate I can still surf the net and do email between 40-50. Some people say encryting can make it go faster so far I havnt seen that.
shouldntdothat: One thing that will speed up you'r downloads is using the Stuffer in Azurus, this can filter out bad clients that don't share, these are clients that allways download and never upload. Since they never upload they slow your downlon, BitComet is one.

btd8002: That's not true at all. In fact maxing your upload can slow your connection down. Set your upload to 10KB or 10% of your max so you can still use your connection for other purposes. You can max your upload when you're away or asleep.
