Video Description
Quit trying to be clever by saying 1024. I was talking about how bandwidth is advertised. Please read this:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=26

Check and see if your advertised bandwidth is what you're really getting and learn how to compare different internet service providers. Your speed is controlled by your ISP so understanding how it's advertised is key to improving and comparing it.

Yes I know you will go super fast with tons of seeds so quit whinning. Torrents with 10 - 20 people are another story. Tons of people complain their torrent downloads go slow because they're asshats and super-limit the upload rate for fear of the RIAA or their ISP provides horrible upstream rates.

Yes the bandwidth can be capped from where you're downloading from. I'm aware of that. The game download was capped at around 450KB, but I used that as an example comparing kbps to KB/s.

At the end it's not a mistake saying the upload speed is about as fast as you will download on p2p networks/ torrents. Torrents are based on share ratios so you'll get as fast as you can give. As always there are exceptions specially for torrents with tons of seeds but it's a good rule of thumb.

This is the only and definitive way of increasing your connection speed. Your ISP controls it! If it's not going as fast as it should call your ISP's tech support. If you want it faster, compare rates and find what's most affordable for the speed you want. Understanding how they advertise their packages is key to knowing if you're getting ripped off.

Comments:

Sushiiiiiiiiiiiii: awesome job jimmy keep up the good work

wannabehaxor: FIRST PAGE YES!!!
And again, thank you

LeonSORTX: yes very helpful stuff here , Jimmy !! Thanks!!

sticksquash: whoa 641 kbs per sec on DSL? I get 789 kbs per sec on comcast cable ( formerly Time Warner Cable )

jimmyrcom: uh so what exactly are you saying I'm confused about. I agree with those statements.

TehBANN3D: Oh no, I was replying to someone saying Comcast was formerly known as Time Warner Cable

wannabehaxor: i think i'm destoying my neibors connection to lol

stoners101: i did that same speed test. but it wouldnt show my torrent speed thing

pimpsahoy1594: good tutorial...but whats up with you and squirrel pictures?

TheMagician17: Now I don't understand the end, I have 8/1 DSL connection and when I usually download using torrents I download about 800-900KB/s (takes about 7 minutes to download 350MB file) and upload about 80-100KB/s. Even if you have 1GB connection, you might stil be downloading only 50KB/s, if the server can't send faster. In this case you were downloading around 400KB/s, maybe that's the highest the server can send.

anthonyo99: How do u download so fast, i have a 54mbps wireless connection and i hardly get over 20 or 30kb/s

TehBANN3D: no you dont. Your router is *ABLE* to handle up to 54mbps of traffic, but your connection speeds as far as the internet is limited by your ISP. if the speeds you are paying for are supposed to be over that, contact your ISP and tell them.

TheMagician17: Oh, sorry, in the end you were converting your UPLOAD speed, but you said you can DOWNLOAD only about that 75KB/s or whatever it was, you probably meant to say you can only UPLOAD at that speed, but can DOWNLOAD about 650KB/s.

And if I were you I'd censor that IP address.

TheMagician17: YouTube never posts my comment even if it says so >_>

Let's post it again... At the end you probably meant to say you can UPLOAD only about 75KB/s and not DOWNLOAD.

jimmyrcom: no, I was saying in torrents your download rate is usually about the same as your upload rate since it's based on share ratios

jimmyrcom: yeah the server caps sometimes, but speed test sites don't cap so you'll be able to test accurately. The game dl was just an example of how KB/s rather than kbps

TehBANN3D: Jimmy, If I were you, I'd redo this video and not give out your general location.

Also, speeds are often bottlenecked by a server's upload rate, and have nothing to do with your ISP.

jimmyrcom: yeah the game download was capped at around 450kb even though my max was around 650.

polites: And TehBANN3D, if I were you, I'd stfu as he didn't mention download = max.

TehBANN3D: ... I never said he did. But the fact is, high speed internet means nothing if you cant download at That rate. People were so amazed by that woman who has the fastest connection in the world (50gbps) and several news stations reported she could download a full feature movie in 2 seconds. Well, I'd like to see the hosting server give her that download rate.

Also, The fact that he gives out his location is a genuine concern, and I hope he'll edit that out.

TehBANN3D: No, but it is a breeding grounds for harassment/identity theft

ogwilson: You're a dumbass. He never said he lived near texas, he just simply chose that location. And even if he does live near Texas, who could find him based off of the slim info they can get? He'd probably be more findable from a WHOIS? search than clicking a location on a geographical map. Idiot.

TehBANN3D: did you not see the ~50? Plus, unless you've been to that site, you dont know what your talking about. The gold pyramid is the preferred server based COMPLETELY ON GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF RELATIVE CLOSENESS. And I've already found him, so shut it, I was going to request deletion on all his info, but there are so many white book sites that its pointless now.

TehBANN3D: Sorry, let me elaborate on that ~50. It means he's within 50 miles of the server. If you didn't catch that before, thats what I meant.

spikester20: wow my kilobytes per seconds is at least 3 times faster

42ndsheep: Thanks a ton, very useful as always.

Dainnho: I got 28kb second :(

-.-

Compgenius999: mine goes 54 megabits = 6 912 kilobytes yay me i on wireless and it normally says 54 mbps i googled it and i got 6,912m kb/s!! yay me!!

flyingace15: thanks so much
this is what i was asking on your page, but all you told me was get a new ISP =P

sdp8787: very informative video man, thanks a lot!

Phinehas46: I got 56 kb download speed but almost double for upload. Still slow though. I guess Earthlink is a rip off.

stikfigure16: omg! i got 1317 kilobits! i'm supposed to have yahoo high speed internet 2.0

wannabehaxor: Why do you like squirrels so much?
lol

thflims22: How do you get your logo at the bottom of the screen?

S4br3W0lf: Dude how the hell are you getting 400kb/sec? I'm on DSl and I get 50kb/sec max.

stikfigure16: why was my kilobit to kilobyte so low????

Ghold125: O.o my dl is: 11404 kb/s download, 1879 kb/s download

powerup151: A 1000? Sorry, it's 1024, not 1000.

JadedVamp1re: i use 8mb tiscali but only get 120kb/s download maximum :(

ciarrella: uh oh. i guess i need to call my provider.

Spike1882: Hey i have a question i download stuff anywhere from 1kb to 200 kb but my upload speed thingy was at 480 when i tested it so i am curious as to why it is this slow...also you didnt really tell how to improve it just how to tell if its accurate to what they said it was

jimmyrcom: ask your isp if it's not the advertised rate...

jerommeke69: Awesome tutorial! Very useful! OMG your internet connection is twice as fast as mine :D But I've got one of the best in my country for the price I'm paying.

muffinxsaurs: omg you connection is way better than mine D:

varoku: WOW!! my thing is like 400 off. but its still like hella fast.. i can download that game in 2 min. i do 1.2mb a sec. and i do 700kb a sec on imesh.

1random2dude3: thanks for the tutorial jimmy, now i can yell at my ISP company :)

Asteao: After you've done the test you can see global stats. And if you go to your area you can see the isps and there connection speed in your area. It's a pretty easy to see your options and see who has the best connection rate.

ssjcel1: I have cable and the company offers a 15 Mbps.. That would be in MegaBits right? not Megabytes? So after I did the speed test it gave me 7224Kbps for the download time which is actually 7.224 Megabits? So in conclusion im losing 8 Mbps... is that normal for Cable?
Good video btw it will definitely help me understand more about Internet Services.

vernong1992: dang Jimmy you got really fast internet... my current ISP has half of your speed...

mitdylan: My download speed sucks.
But DSL craps out on me all the time.
AW nuts.
dang you cogeco.

DeMoNXPSP: I need to say a few things here :

* Jimmyr really should have told you that DSL has a disadvanage because you need to be living very close to the telephone exchange to get the speeds advertised.

Cable will get the advertised speeds no matter how far away you live from the cabinet/exchange.

* Speedtest sites are useless, Most of the time they will fail to calc the correct speed.

* Not a good idea to have your IP address showing :P

esetnod32: yep
hes showing his IP
lol

jimmyrcom: the day someone hacks me is the day pigs fly. 75.53.40.163

esetnod32: is ur IP dyamic? thats why ur showing it

llewxamsoulsephiroth: lol yeah i watch your videos dude, only just got back from portugal an damn i only managed to learn a few more words to help my portugeuse. anyways yeah i doubt someone could hack you, you seem like a genious.

TheIshter: Oh wow, I didn't know you can fly.

LyinDan: Famous last words: "Watch this!" Better safe than sorry, JimmyR. Real hackers love a challenge (not me. I like it easy).

TehBANN3D: Yeah, but the day someone social engineers private information out of a clueless employee of your ISP could very well be yesterday. I dont worry about hackers as much as I worry about other Phreakers and Con artists adept at getting what they want through bypassing human facilities.

computerchris78590: hey i have still been having trouble with my audio and video sync in camstudio. When i enable "Use MCI recording" in the audio options for microphone, it works fine but my file size is way too big like over 100 mb for a 9 min video. BUt if its not enabled i get all correct file size, but the audio and video is out of sync. EX: audio comes before the video. Any ideas? i have all my settings the same as jimmys.

SignorSincero: I did the test with the same yokey you used... I got 5,226 for downloads, and 6,599 for uploads... why is that second figure so high compared to what your results showed?

Thanks

OlmecProductions: Some ISPs just have a bigger upload then download speed, nothing really to go head over heel for. It looks like your ISP is more on the side of webhosting.

esetnod32: u have the same ISP as me
sbc

williamn6133: Saying the upload speed is as fast as your download speed is a big freaking mistake. It totally over simplifies it and confuses me. I upload steadily at about 20KB all day. But when I download something I get over 450 KB!

It works because my ratio is built over a much longer period of time spent uploading compared to how often I download. BUT that's only on sites where I have a ratio.

On most public torrents, it doesn't freaking matter how fast you upload, or if you don't even upload at all!

jimmyrcom: torrents with tons of seeds to leachers go fast. Normal torrents go about the speed of your uploads. It makes a huge different if you upload, and you better upload or you're a douche leacher.

SignorSincero: What's an example of a good torrent programme? Is Limewire torrent or p2p?

LyinDan: "Normal torrents go about the speed of your uploads."

Not on the sites that I frequent. There may be such sites, but ratio seems to be based more long-term for me. I may do 200-300kBps on a download while I am merrily uploading at 20 or 30. But I had better leave my upload going quite a while to make up the difference or get banned. Could be that the sites you frequent are different than mine, true.

Naota25: my cable is 1552.625 kilobytes and upload 204.5 kilobytes

damanus29: whats your take on fios from verizon

OlmecProductions: Fast as hell with the 30 megabit package.

WTFisonyourface: I have like 10MB Per sec. except my computer is slow

DrCrYz: jimmy dude my max upload on uk dsl is 35 K/B but when d/l from p2p I often get 400 K/B, so your theory is off with this one mate, just because im uploading at 35 does not mean I cant download faster than 35 due to the fact other people on the torrent could be uploading at 500K/B thus I get a faster speed.

bayv707: may i ask what screen recording program you used? thanks

Shinigami37: He has like, 3 tutorials on the screen recording software. It's camstudio. Check his other tutorials, they tell you how to set it up.

hotwheelguy: i like the fraction-of-a-second picture of the squirrel so that its ur video thumbnail... nice : p

Shinigami37: Yeah, the squirrel is gradually getting closer.

muffinman540: its called a c-c-c-c-combo breaker.

roccigiovanniberrini: great video what ya think about sprint broadband cards?
RgB

pimpizzle2: 7169 kbps for me trying to dl dofus to see the rest =)))

pimpizzle2: 7169 kilobits = 896.12500 kilobytes

Im guessing thats good?

jsvitak: Woah thats awesome, I tested my speed earlier today useing the same tester.

Another awesome video, five stars. Keep it up!

punxgr8: for me:
Download speed: 634
Upload: 126

snouter: Cable is so much faster than DSL. I just got 9300 download and 1800 upload and the phone and TV was on through the cable. I have used Cablenut to optimize the settings.

R4ndomCrap: that cable vs DSL argument is bogus. It's a valid theory, as in it's reasonable, but it is in fact false in terms of speed results.

SatwaMan: What are you using to screen capture that for a vid?

legitsnipe: your wrong 1000 mb isnt 1 gig 1024 mb is 1 gig

jimmyrcom: and a 1024 bytes is a mb. and 1024 gigs is a terrabyte. I also said my connection was going 5mbits and not 5.130mbits, who the heck cares.

ogwilson: actually, 1024 bytes is a KILObyte. Come on jimmy man.

PabZ2K: why are u using google??? u should use peroosal there ae no ads on searches.

ChaosBlader: Cause everyone uses google. Why use some unknown search engine, for teaching others who may not know anything about computers.

SoulWolff: Download: 11122 kb/s
Upload: 1360 kb/s
:D

Spike1882: What if my highest upload speed doesnt match my download speeds for most things

ogwilson: Jimmy, just one thing, How much you upload depends on how much you download is not at all true. I can only upload at like 30kbps MAX, but i've downloaded as fast as 180-190 kbytes per second. So you may need to recheck that theory.

Mister22MR2: Bytes and up are in 1024, not 1000. :)

TehBANN3D: depends. In SI prefix, its 1000 bytes per kilobyte, which is what companies whose products deal in digital memory use. Operating systems read in binary prefix though.

atomicfrost: Great vid but how I compare is if you have like 1.5mbps which is 1500kbps all you do is divide by 10 or eleven you should get your downloads which in my case is 160kb. Should be close. And in Jimmy's case this method works as well.

jukimv1986: 8 bits = 1 byte
8 kilobits = 1 kilobyte
it's the same with diferent names

HeadDominion: hey i just figured that i'm getting ripped off. I pay $150 per month on super fast connection, but accordingly i am actually getting 1/10th of the speed i should be getting.

i'm gonna start writing some letters, jimmy so thanks :)

TehBANN3D: ... Unless you're running a small business, Fast connections aren't worthwhile. You'll never get at your highest speed on web sites/game servers because your speed is determined by the server's speed. The only time fast connections like that are useful is when you're having to divide the connection amongst several computers. $150 is way too much unless you are running a business or there aren't any cable/dsl lines in your area.

freiteez: im watching all your videos, they are awesome! i learn sooo much :)

B787YV: This is mine 1189 kilobits = 148.62500 kilobytes is it 1MB? If change to another company how do I know if they are going to serious or not, to avoid going from a company to another.

darkduskx: Nice of you to make this video. Many people do get confused with this gimmick.

andythefan: this is bullshit

1024 kilobytes is a meg
he says its 1000

hes talking about alot of stuff he doesnt know what hes talking about

my utorrent speeds go up to 300 kb/s even if my upload is 30 kb/s

hes doesnt know what hes talking about
and this has nothing to do with improving actual speed

jimmyrcom: Thanks for your ignorance retard. I guess you think anecdotal evidence is right 100% of the time. You should read the description next time. I also said 5130 kilobits is going 5mbits and not 5.130 mbits. I hate know-it-all script kiddy idiots like you.

TehBANN3D: Jesus christ, I feel like a broken record. If you knew anything you'd know that 1024 KB is only 1 MB In Binary prefix (what Operating Systems use). He correctly concluded 1000 KB = 1 MB AND STATED that that was what Hard Drive and Thumb drives were. HDD companies use SI prefix (base 10 conversions) To list memory because It advertises a higher ammount of memory.

TehBANN3D: Also, According to the IEC (international Electronics Commission) 1000 KB (Kilobytes)= 1 MB (Megabyte) Jimmy was right.

If you wanted to make a case of it, Jimmy would have had to refer to them As Kibibytes.

papadick2: Hi Jimmy.i dont have that much of a technical degree of understanding, however as a user in the UK of Orange network i can say the speed tests do not bearout the advertised package.Whats the ( LLU )refered to when i query the down-upload speeds from my ISP?

jimmyrcom: the LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) I know is a structure some ISPs have to follow. I don't see what it has to do with dl / uploads

papadick2: After singing up for a yearly contract a long tine ago,at up to 1 mb download speed i was ofFered , for an additional sum the opertunity of a 4mb download speed,This worked well for a short period of time then seemed to revert to a slower speed than the original. On contacting the provider the reason for this was given that i had been transfered to ( LLU )

minky311: Awesome video. Keep up the good work.

aznlilboiz: i dont believe this video. my utorrent can go way up higher thn my upload speed...

BeechSundowner: Good explaination but where are the tips on improving speeds?

syed1994: Lol, I know the difference because my ISP explains that on the FAQ. Kb/sec * 8 = Kbps

syed1994: Anyways, DSL is NOT Dedicated and Internet is shared and my ISP said so and its true because we connect to Layer3 or NTT. I still like my Cable connection and I just ignore those offers that they give free laptops and stuff. Anyone who wants proof, tell me!

Hieyz0r: lol, kb/sec * 8 = kB/s. 'kb/sec'='kbps'

pokemonlovermand: i thoght of something, can you get a download/upload speed at 1 megabyte or more?

Shaun750: Dude!!!
Where's the info to increase my download speed!!
Not being rude but your info on Torrents is totally wrong mate.
My max upload is about 100KBS,but i can often download on utorrent at 700KBS often more and to be honest I limit my upload to 25KBS as if i let it upload to the max it affects the download. It's a bit like the same pipe coming in as going out, only so much room.
Hey anyways I got two Cloned ;) modems and have had 2

Keep em coming.

jimmyrcom: your ISP controls your download speed. PERIOD. You need to understand how they advert speeds to know if you're getting the best deal. That's for the anecdotal evidence but you probably download movies with like 5000 seeds and 4000 leachers. Torrents with 6 - 20 people are a different story entirely.

Shaun750: Of course I'm getting the best deal!!
It's for free!! :)
Google theoryshare and you'll get the idea ;)
I also got a duel wan router which is supposed to combine , or at least load balance two connections, but it seemed to make things worse.
You've got a very good way of explaining things jimmy?
Hope your making the most of your talents :)

lavitsofvirdian: Hey Jimmy I really love your vids n stuff but this only compares download speeds not, how to improve them and yours are so much higher than mine how do you do that?

waltribeiro: your the man. the cam studio helps me with my music tutorials on my channel. Thanks for sharing!

homy0007: i use roadrunner and i only have around 500 kbps download and 125 kbps upload...

ugstimmy: soooooo how do i make it faster? you just told me about what a kilobit was and what a kilobyte is, not how to make my connection faster.

good video non-the-less

sspoonbenderr: <3333

Keep up the good work, buddy.

seltsem: again interesting stuff you present. Thank you for your good work and please, keep on edutaining us.

MisaMisa: your wrong about the torrent comment, there are a wide range of factors in your download speed, for example.. you only download as much as people seed, you download at maximum speed if you arent using your whole upload bandwidth, and you download faster if you upload faster.

I have an aussie connection right? so my upload is shocking (all cable is this bad) with 256kbps (roughly 30kb/s) and yet I'm able to get naruto at like 400+kb/s.

MisaMisa: Also when the seed:leech ratio is healthy, like 5:1, youll get the file really freaking fast because thats 5 seeds to 1 leecher, not to mention all the leechers who you can also download from. The main thing you should do is understand what your upload limit is, and limit your p2p upload to about 60-80% of your maximum upload. This will give room for your best download performance.

jimmyrcom: read the description next time.

Deftari: you said 1000kb is 1mb.. but accually 1mb is 1024kb .. and 1gb is 1024mb wich is 1048576kb.. and its huge difference when it comes to terabytes.. becouse its 24gb loss..

jimmyrcom: read the description next time.

TehBANN3D: mm... you're wrong about that (plus it would be more than just 24 if what you said were true)

1000kb/MB = 1kb/KB

you're thinking of a different prefix

1024 KiB (kibibyte) = 1 MiB (mibibyte)

linkthelunn: lol ive got rly crappy net 20 KB per second(-=

ddpxl: in the netherlands there is a family-dsl with 20megabits per second .. so arround 2MB per second..
a usual CD (700MB) download would actually need arround 6 Minutes..
but still the downside.. 1megabit up... its good but .. these rates should be balanced because its only good for videostreams and homeservers/websites...
peace out!

hysteria544: Thanks again for another great video.

ShiroiSinCell: THANK YOU, for posting this video. It's very useful!
Also, off-topic, I live near you. Well, I'm in Dallas, but still. :) Don't worry, I'll leave you alone! But once again! Amazing video!! 5/5!!

jimmyrcom: my mom works at parkland hospital in dallas

ShiroiSinCell: OMG! My mom used to work there, until they moved her. :)

COOLgunner77: hey..thxs 4 the info's.
vry useful

jimmyrcom: no it's not. your isp controls your download speed

sumfortyone: awesome video. I didn't know the difference before.

also, if i didn't want to go to google to convert my kbps to KB's could i just use a calculator and divide the number by 8?

Danteezy: so how do u get faster downloads?

BigMichaelD: Are you sure Jimmy? I up at about 10kb/s and I've hit an average of 230+ for a few hours.

TheDeviliam: Dude - you are so wrong about the torrent speed thing. You do not understand it. Also, your explanation of ISPs and speeds is very misleading. Its way too much to say here but dude you should remove this video and post a more correct one. This needs a retraction as the poster is not technical enough.

jimmyrcom: Dude you should read the description next time.

jimmyrcom: Comments blocked due to tons of retards that 1. thought they could just download or install something to make their connection faster. 2. don't understand p2p networks and think torrents with thousands of seeds work the same as torrents with little seeds and 3. Complain about 1024 kB vs mB even though I was simplifying and also said 5.130kilobits = 5 mbit 4. Can't read the damn description.
